Dallas, Texas, Dec. 10, 2019 – The Salesmanship Club of Dallas, host of the AT&T Byron Nelson, announced today that the winner of the annual Byron Nelson Collegiate Golf award will be eligible to play in the following year’s AT&T Byron Nelson tournament. The 2019 Award winner, Ryan Lumsden from Northwestern, will be eligible to play this May. The 2020 award winner will be announced at this year’s tournament and will be eligible to compete in May of 2021.
The Byron Nelson Collegiate Golf award was created in 2001 by the Golf Coaches Association of America to recognize the outstanding graduating men’s college golfer for his career accomplishments on the course, in the classroom, and in his community. Mr. Nelson was passionate about the award and was significantly involved in vetting the criteria used for the award.
“This is considered the most prestigious individual student-athlete award given annually in college golf,” said GCAA President Greg Sands. “The opportunity to showcase a graduating student-athlete who embodies the values that Mr. Nelson held so dear sends the right message to young golfers across the country.”
The 2020 tournament will mark the 75th anniversary of one of the greatest seasons in golf. A season where Byron Nelson won 18 times, including 11 in a row.
“This is an important new component of this prestigious award,” said Mike McKinley, Board Chairman of Salesmanship Club Charitable Golf of Dallas and member of the Byron Nelson Collegiate Award Selection Committee. “We want to honor Mr. Nelson in everything we do. We look forward to working with the GCAA and the PGA TOUR to continue to elevate these great student-athletes that represent the same competitive spirit, sense of sportsmanship and selfless service to others that Mr. Nelson so gracefully and humbly modeled for us all.”
Planning has already begun for the 2020 AT&T Byron Nelson and will include a new stadium atmosphere on the finishing holes, a foodie set-up, and even more ways to celebrate moms on Mother’s Day. Stay up to date on the latest news about next year’s tournament here.
