Actually there can be a second cut in PGA TOUR events after Saturday’s play when the number of players making the Friday cut exceeds 78 players. This is what happened at the HP Byron Nelson Championship this year.
The 36-hole cut is the low 70 players and ties. There were 67 players at even par or better after the second round. There were 18 players at one over par so to get to 70 players we had to take all 18 of the players at one over par. This now makes the field, after the cut, 84 players. Therefore there will be a cut after Saturday’s play to the low 70 players and ties.
The players who do not finish in the low 70 will be designated in the record book at “MDF”. This means they made the cut but did not finish. These players still earn some prize money based on how they finish.
